1. Happiness Protects The Heart

Additionally, research has revealed a link between happiness and heart rate variability. Heart rate variability, which refers to the time interval between heartbeats, is connected with an increased risk of developing a variety of ailments if a person is not happy. Researchers tracked 76 patients suspected of having coronary artery disease in a study. But was happiness associated with a healthy heart, even in persons at risk of heart disease? People who reported being the happiest on the day had their heartbeats measured. The recordings were astonishing as individuals had a more stable heart rate than on other days.
These impacts can accumulate to create significant disparities in heart health over time. In a study, researchers brought nearly 2000 Canadians to a laboratory to discuss their workplace anger and stress. On a scale of one to five, observers graded them on their ability to convey positive feelings such as joy, happiness, excitement, enthusiasm, and contentment. The researchers followed up the people ten years later to see how they were doing- and discovered that the happier participants had fewer chances of acquiring coronary heart disease. 2. Happiness Boosts Immune System

In a trial, 350 adults volunteered to be exposed to the common cold. Prior to the exposure, researchers contacted them six times in two weeks and asked how often they felt good that day, for instance, being active, satisfied, or calm. After 5 days in quarantine, those with the highest levels of positive mood were less likely to get a cold.
To understand whether happier people may be less susceptible to illness, some of the same researchers administered the hepatitis B vaccine to 81 graduate students in a study. Following the first two doses, individuals assessed their own happy emotions on the same nine scales. Positive emotions were nearly twice as likely to be associated with a strong antibody response to the vaccine – an indication of a robust immune system. Rather than only impacting the symptoms, happiness seemed to improve the functions of the cells too.
3. Happiness – An Antidote to Stress
Not only is stress distressing psychologically, but it also causes biochemical changes in our hormones and blood pressure. Happiness appears to mitigate these consequences or at the very least, aid in the recovery of an individual.
The study mentioned above checked the connection between happiness and health. Researchers discovered connections between happiness and stress too. The happiest participants had 23% lower cortisol levels than the least happy participants. Blood clotting protein was also 12 times lower which is another measure of stress.
4. Happiness Decreases Disease & Disability
In a study, participants were asked to score their recent happy emotional encounters and then report how frequently they had negative symptoms. Symptoms such as muscle strain, dizziness, and heartburn. Individuals who initially reported the highest levels of happy feelings improved in health over the course of the trial, eventually outperforming their unhappy counterparts. Their health improved over five weeks while the health of the least happy participants deteriorated.
Another study performed stated that a happy mood may also help to alleviate pain while feeling sick. For almost 3 months, women with rheumatoid arthritis and persistent pain assessed themselves weekly on positive feelings such as interest, enthusiasm, and inspiration. Those with higher overall scores of positive feelings were less likely to report an increase in pain.
5. Happiness Increases Life Span
Finally, the ultimate health indicator may be longevity and happiness plays a critical role here. In a study, over 4000 individuals aged 52 to 79 expressed their happiness, excitement, and contentment many times during the day. Over a five-year period, happier adults were 35% less likely to die than their unhappier peers.
Many people would give anything to be happy and content. Multiple research shows that feeling happy boosts the overall well being but if we have to force ourselves to be happy, it may result in more stress.
