Mindfulness originated around 2500 years ago from ancient eastern and Buddhist philosophy. The concept was introduced to the west by Jon Kabat-Zinn. According to Kabat-Zinn in his book Mindfulness-Based Interventions in Context: Past, Present, and Future, mindfulness is “The awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”
